Team Uganda emerged victorious at the 2025 Victoria Cup, reclaiming the prestigious title after a hard-fought battle against Kenya at Mt Kipipiri Golf Resort.
This marks only the second time in the tournament’s nine-year history that Uganda has won the event, having previously triumphed in 2019.
The victory was particularly sweet for Uganda, given last year’s dramatic collapse at Uganda Golf Club (UGC), where Kenya managed to salvage a draw at the last moment. With that memory still fresh, Uganda entered the final day of the 2025 edition with a commanding five-point lead, but Kenya put up a spirited fight.
Kenya won four consecutive singles games, raising fears of another dramatic comeback. Belju Shah, Elvis Muigua, John Lejirima, and Daniel Kiragu all secured key wins for the hosts, cutting Uganda’s lead significantly.
However, Uganda’s Titus Okwong and John Muslimenta turned the tide with impressive victories over Tsevi Sonc and Josephat Rono, respectively. Joseph Reagan Akena’s halved match against Ebill Omollo all but confirmed Uganda’s win.
Despite Peter Mayende’s loss, Elton Thembo’s crucial victory ensured that Uganda sealed the championship in a tense contest.
The tournament was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2023, it was canceled due to technicalities.
Uganda’s victory at Mt Kipipiri was a stark contrast to last year’s disappointment, where they had led for most of the competition before Kenya staged a dramatic comeback.
The team was led by coach Flavia Namakula, with Paul Habyarimana serving as the team manager.
