The Uganda men’s and women’s national hockey teams are gearing up for the Zambezi Series, departing in the early hours of Monday morning for Zambia. The teams will undertake a challenging journey of about 2,500km from Lugogo to Lusaka, passing through Tanzania.
Coached by Vincent Arnold Kasasa and Moses Nsereko respectively, the teams have undergone rigorous training at the National Hockey Stadium in Lugogo.
Despite having missed recent continental events, both teams are optimistic about their prospects in the upcoming tournament.
The men’s team, led by captain Emmanuel Baguma, includes experienced players alongside promising debutants.
Goalkeepers Charles Ekapolon and Richard Kaijuka will provide stability at the back, while outfield players such as Alfred Agaba, Brian Bayuule, and Solomon Mutalya bring their skills and leadership to the field.
With Vincent Arnold Kasasa at the helm as coach, supported by assistant coach Bernard Bwire and team manager Byron Matovu, the men’s team is well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
On the other hand, the women’s team, captained by Norah Alum, is equally determined to make an impact in the tournament.
With a mix of experienced players like Anitah Atim and emerging talents like Hildah-Star Balondemu, the team boasts a strong lineup.
Under the guidance of coach Moses Nsereko, assistant coach Martin Okello, and team manager Bridget Baine, the women’s team is poised to showcase their skills on the international stage.
Both teams are grateful for the opportunity to represent Uganda on the international stage and are determined to make their country proud.
The contingent is led by Philip Wafula, president of the Uganda Hockey Association, who believes that this young team is the foundation block for the dream to play at the 2026 World Cup.
With aspirations high and determination in abundance, the Uganda hockey teams are ready to take on the Zambezi Series and leave a mark on the tournament.
