As Uganda readies itself to host Group C fixtures of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), the Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning to potential wrongdoers and assured fans of a comprehensive security plan during the tournament.
Addressing the press at the Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday morning, Uganda Police spokesperson and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kituuma Rusoke, emphasized a zero-tolerance approach to crime during the highly anticipated football event.
“This is not just a football event—it is a national moment of pride and international focus,” Rusoke stated. “But we are equally aware that such events can attract opportunistic criminals. Let it be known: we shall act decisively against any disruptive or criminal activity.”
With the tournament kicking off on August 2 and the first Group C match scheduled for August 4 at the refurbished Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, Rusoke outlined a multi-agency security operation. The effort involves coordination between the Police, military, and intelligence agencies to secure stadiums, hotels, training facilities, fan zones, and transit routes.
The Police spokesperson also warned against common crimes associated with major events, including ticket fraud, impersonation, and unauthorized entry using forged passes. He confirmed that surveillance systems and undercover security personnel will be actively monitoring all activity.
“Tight security measures are in place, and there will be no leniency,” Rusoke warned. “Any wrongdoer caught will face the full extent of the law. Criminals, be warned—our eyes are everywhere.”
Rusoke further called on the public to cooperate with security officers, follow stadium regulations, and report any suspicious activity to help ensure a safe environment for all attendees.
