The Uganda Gazelles put up a spirited performance but narrowly lost 85-87 to Egypt in a nail-biting pre-tournament friendly played in Cairo, Egypt. The match was part of their preparation for the upcoming 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, set to tip off on 25th July in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The friendly clash showcased Uganda’s growing strength and competitiveness on the continental stage.
Melissa Akullu led the scoring for the Gazelles with an impressive 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists, while Jane Asinde posted a solid double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Hope Akello added 17 points and 4 boards, and Perus Nyamwenge contributed 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Currently on a training camp in Egypt, the Gazelles are scheduled to face Egypt, Rwanda, and Cameroon in friendlies from July 12 to 15 at the Mostapha Sports Halls in Cairo. The team will then shift their training base to Alexandria before flying to Abidjan for the prestigious continental tournament.
Uganda booked its place at the AfroBasket by winning the Zone V Qualifiers last year — also held in Cairo — where they memorably defeated host nation Egypt in the final.
