Vipers SC cemented their status as Uganda’s dominant force of the decade with a routine 2-0 win over a subdued Kitara FC side in Hoima on Wednesday, sealing the 2024/25 StarTimes Uganda Premier League title with a game to spare.
The victory lifts the Venoms to seven league titles — now level with Express FC — and within touching distance of all-time leaders SC Villa (17) and KCCA FC (13).
Despite Kitara boasting a strong season, their performance on the day fell well short of the occasion, and Vipers took full advantage. Gatuso Mulongo fired the opener in the first half before talisman Yunus Sentamu calmly finished off the job after the break. The result was never really in doubt.
Vipers had suffered a late-season scare after a surprising defeat to BUL FC last week, briefly reigniting NEC FC’s hopes. However, NEC’s 1-0 win over a disjointed SC Villa at Wankulukuku proved too little too late. Dickson Niwamanya’s second-half header kept NEC’s momentum alive, but Vipers’ lead was simply unassailable.
Coach John Luyinda’s men now sit atop the table with 68 points, their attacking flair and league-best goal difference of +34 setting them apart. NEC trail by four points on 64 and must now settle for second place.
Elsewhere, BUL FC locked in third spot with a 1-0 victory over Maroons FC in Njeru, courtesy of a neat finish by Karim Ndugwa in the 25th minute. The result leaves BUL nine points clear of KCCA, who finally showed glimpses of their old self with a 5-0 demolition of Lugazi FC.
At Lugogo, Emmanuel Anyama and Joao Gabriel both scored twice to lift KCCA to their 13th win in a campaign that saw their title challenge disintegrate and coach Abdallah Mubiru dismissed. Interim boss Jackson Magera appears set to steady the ship as the season winds down.
