The Uganda Rugby Union (URU), together with its key sponsors, has officially announced the launch of the 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership, scheduled for February 7, marking the opening of the national rugby calendar for the year.
The season will kick off with an action-packed opening weekend featuring nine Premiership matches, promising high-quality competition, professionalism, excitement, and a strong emphasis on player welfare and safeguarding. The Premiership will run for five months, showcasing 12 men’s teams and seven women’s teams in what is expected to be one of the most competitive rugby seasons in the country’s history.
The men’s competition will feature Stanbic Black Pirates, Hippos, KCB KOBs, Platinum Credit Heathens, Toyota Buffaloes, Rhinos, Warriors, Kakira Simbas, Impis, Walukuba Barbarians, Victoria Sharks, and Mongers.
The women’s league will see Black Pearls, Thunderbirds, Nile Rapids, Panthers, Ewes, She Wolves, and Avengers battle for supremacy.
Speaking at the announcement, Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe described the launch as a defining moment for the sport.
“The launch of the 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership, together with our partners, represents another significant step forward for Ugandan rugby. What makes this moment truly special is our collective unity—from players, clubs, sponsors, and fans—all working together to deliver an exceptional premiership and season. Collectively, we are forging a more robust, competitive, and dynamic Ugandan rugby community, poised to endure for generations.”
Sponsors also reaffirmed their commitment to growing the game and deepening fan engagement. Wangechi Gitahi, Head of Marketing at Nile Breweries, emphasized the role of supporters in shaping the sport’s identity.
“Rugby greatness does not live on the pitch alone—it lives in the stands, in the chants, the belief, and the passion of the fans. This season, we are celebrating the supporter as the 16th Man, the extra force that lifts teams, shifts momentum, and turns matches into unforgettable moments. Greatness at Play is about recognising that every cheer, every drumbeat, and every raised glass contributes to the spirit of Ugandan rugby.”
Hariss International, through its brands, also confirmed continued and expanded involvement in the Premiership.
“Rockboom, Uganda’s number one energy drink, will continue to energize the game at the Uganda Rugby Premiership. In addition, our sister brand Krystal Water—Uganda’s most premium water—is coming on board as the official hydration partner for the Premiership,” said Samuel Hooper, Head of Marketing at Hariss International.
