The 2021 Seniors Open Golf Championship that was played on Saturday at Uganda Golf Club’s (UGC) par-72 course in Kitante, Kampala is one of the activities that will help mark the 30th anniversary of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA)
After the tournament ending successfully, the aviation industry regulator who sponsored the event say that they are happy to partner with the Uganda Seniors Golfing Society (USGS) for their 30th anniversary celebrations that will climax in January next year.
“We have been partnering with USGS for six years now and we love it. This (Seniors Open) is one of the events which is on top of our activity calendar and we’re happy to celebrate our 30th anniversary with you,” UCAA Deputy Director General Olive Birungi Lumonya told golfers during the 19th hole experience adding that she delights in returning home and seeing familiar faces.
However, the men’s overall winner in the seniors main event was Kaka Matama off 68 nett while Jovia Otim emerged ladies’ overall winner with 71 nett.
Gross overall winners were Sam Zaramaba (men), who triumphed with 81 gross on count back and Monica Ntege (ladies) with 89 gross.
Still at 19th hole, USGS Chairman Sam Onek was full of praise for the participants who graced the showpiece whose initial date was disrupted by other engagements in the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) calendar. He also paid tribute to seniors who passed away this year and he also used the same platform to thank tournament partners.
However, in the seniors gold category (70 years and above), Eldad Mwangusya emerged winner with 71 nett, in the silver category (65-69 years), James Sekajugo was winner with 71 nett whilst last year’s men’s overall winner Fred Kasumba beat Conrad Van Nierk on count back (70 nett c/b) to win the bronze category (55-64 years).
Connie Mukuru beat Ruth Ssali on count back (74 nett c/b) to win in the seniors ladies category.
In the main event side bets, Gen Gier claimed the seniors men’s longest drive gong while Monica Ntege took the ladies’.
Sam Mubiru won the senior men’s nearest to the pin prize whilst Rose Azuba took home the ladies’.
A subsidiary event, graced by players aged below 55 years was also played on the same day with respective group winners and runners up getting recognition.
Apart from Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, other tournament partners were; Uganda Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Crown Beverages, Safari Trackers, Bwindi and Uganda Breweries Limited.
