Local rugby fans won’t have to wait for long before they witness a titanic clash in the 2022 Nile Special Rugby Premier League season as Heathens are all geared up to play host to perennial rivals Kobs today, Saturday, 15th January at Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala.
The match day two clash dubbed the ‘Lions Cup’ could possibly set a tone for this season’s trophy hunt with Kobs seeking to retain the title that they won last year unbeaten while Heathens who now have a rejuvenated side following a busy transfer window are aiming to add another league title to their impressive trophy cabinet.
In their previous two meetings, both sides won a match apiece with Kobs triumphing in the 2021 clash, beating Heathens 19-11 in a ‘league decider.’ However, the latter triumphed with a 06-00 win during a floodlights clash in the 2019/20 season thanks to Aaron Ofoyrwoth pair of penalties.
In the opening match day of the season, both sides picked bonus point wins with Heathens thrashing their Kyadondo neighbors Buffaloes 50-00 to top the radar on the first day with five points. Kobs on the other hand demolished Impis at Legends 46-05 and are second on the table.
Heathens will still be without Simon “Diego” Olet who is awaiting medical clearance to return to play. His place will be filled Aziz Khan. However, Kobs have all players available and will fancy their chances on a foreign turf.
Many pundits say that this will be a close contest though the winner will likely be the side with better forwards and also that the home side may have a slight advantage.
Meanwhile, at Kings Park Bweyogerere, third placed Black Pirates will be aiming to inflict a heavy defeat on Rams and should the ‘Lions Cup’ score margin be meager, the Sea Robbers could go atop the table if they pick a bonus point at home.
However, Rams fans will be hoping that a miracle happens again as their side beat Pirates 15-13 at Kings Park in the 2019/20 season, which still remains Rams only win against Pirates with the latter having won all their previous encounters.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day at Kyadondo, Buffaloes who are currently at the rock bottom of the 10-team table will entertain ninth placed Impis in a lunch time clash.
In Jinja, Hippos will aim to get off the mark when they face Warriors at Dam Waters while in Entebbe Mongers will aim to maintain their winning run against Rhinos who also picked a win on match day one.
