Philip Kiptoo, a seasoned long-distance runner hailing from Kapchorwa, demonstrated his exceptional prowess at the highly anticipated 2024 Absa KH3 – 7 Hills Run, held amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the Kololo Independence Grounds/Kololo Airstrip in Kampala this Sunday.
In a display of remarkable athleticism and determination, Kiptoo surged ahead to claim the coveted title of overall winner in the men’s 21-kilometer category, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 1:13:36.
In recognition of his outstanding achievement, Kiptoo was honored with a prestigious award—a 50×100 land title generously bestowed upon him by Bakayima Real Estate Agents, esteemed partners of the event. This remarkable gesture not only serves as a token of appreciation for his hard-earned victory but also symbolizes the enduring spirit of collaboration and support within the running community.
“Prior to this event, I dedicated myself to rigorous training sessions, so it comes as no surprise that I stand here today as the victor. This win has bolstered my confidence and provided me with the momentum to pursue opportunities abroad and compete in international races,” remarked Kiptoo, expressing his satisfaction with his performance. He further expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to run for a cause, aligning with the theme of this year’s run.
Meanwhile, Brian Ategeka and Aggrey Agaba won silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 21-kilometer category with a time of 1:18:03 and 1:27:55
Chemusto Kareen won gold, Chesang won silver, and Chebet Saibi won bronze in the women’s event.
Additionally, the top two males and females from respective running clubs will have the opportunity to participate in the 2025 Absa Run Your City marathon in Johannesburg, South Africa. The beneficiaries are Brian Ategeka and Aggrey Agaba from KH3 Running Club and Kareen Chemusto and Annet Chesang from Joshua Cheptegei Athletics Club.
The event, drawing an astonishing crowd of over 5000 participants spanning diverse age groups and skill levels, commenced with the official flag-off by none other than the esteemed Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, and Mumba Kalifungwa, the Managing Director of Absa Bank Uganda, setting the stage for an exhilarating display of athleticism and camaraderie.
The proceeds from the Run will go towards supporting the girl-child education initiatives, which is a major component of Absa Bank’s promise of being an active force for good.
Helen Basuta Nangonze, the esteemed Marketing and Customer Experience Director at Absa, expressed the bank’s unwavering commitment to championing causes that uplift and empower the girl child. In collaboration with like-minded companies and NGOs, Absa takes pride in actively addressing the challenges faced by young girls and providing them with opportunities for growth and development.
