Uganda men’s cricket team, Cricket Cranes displayed resilience and promise in their first warm-up match at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, despite a close defeat to Namibia. The match, held under the floodlights at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy Stadium, saw Uganda fall by five wickets, but not without notable performances and key takeaways.

In an evenly contested game that stretched into the 19th over, Uganda set a target of 134 runs on a slow-paced wicket. The Ugandan bowlers fought valiantly, pushing the match until Namibia secured victory with just seven balls remaining.

Left-arm orthodox spinner Henry Ssenyondo was a standout performer, delivering a tight spell with figures of 2 wickets for 14 runs in 3 overs. Ssenyondo’s scalps included the crucial dismissals of Jean Pierre Kotze (29 off 31) and Namibian captain Gerhard Erasmus (2 off 4), showcasing his ability to strike at pivotal moments.

The batting highlight for Uganda was top-order batsman Roger Mukasa. Batting at No. 4, Mukasa played a composed and unbeaten innings of 51 runs off 41 balls, hitting six boundaries and one six. His effort provided the backbone for Uganda’s innings, supported by opener Robinson Obuya, who added 38 runs off 27 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes.

Despite these positive individual performances, Uganda’s batting lineup faced challenges, with several players struggling to get going and consuming numerous dot balls. Fielding lapses also marred Uganda’s efforts, as they missed four catches, two stumpings, and one run-out opportunity. Namibia’s Nikolaas Davin capitalized on these errors, scoring a match-winning 54 runs off 34 balls.

Reflecting on the match, the Ugandan team acknowledged the need for improvements but took heart from the experience gained. Playing under floodlights in an ICC event and giving each of the 14 squad members a chance to participate were significant milestones.

Looking ahead, Uganda aims to refine their performance and rectify their shortcomings in their next warm-up match against Scotland on Thursday. The team remains optimistic, determined to build on their strengths and deliver a stronger showing as they continue their World Cup preparations.
