Bujjagali Rafters endured a day of sharp contrasts on the opening day of the Waterfalls Men’s Elite T20 tournament, registering both the highest and lowest team totals of the competition at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
The Rafters were imperious in the morning, crushing Itanda Kayakers by 113 runs after posting a formidable 221/3. However, their dominance evaporated in the afternoon session as they collapsed to just 83 all out, handing Karuma Rapids a comfortable seven-wicket victory in the second match of the double-header.
The split results left the Rafters with mixed fortunes but firmly established them as one of the most unpredictable sides early in the tournament.
Morning Match: Rafters Overpower Itanda Kayakers
Bujjagali Rafters 221/3 (20 overs)
Itanda Kayakers 108 all out (14 overs)
Result: Bujjagali Rafters won by 113 runs
After losing the toss and being asked to bat under overcast skies, Bujjagali Rafters produced a commanding batting performance to seize early control of the tournament.
Opener Fahad Mutagana set the tone with a rapid 52 off 27 balls, peppering the boundary with five fours and four sixes. He combined effectively with Robinson Obuya (39 off 28) as the pair added 92 runs for the first wicket in just 7.3 overs.
Following Mutagana’s dismissal, Obuya and Gerald Olipa maintained the momentum before Obuya fell at 129/2 in the 11th over. From there, Olipa took centre stage, delivering a superb unbeaten 82 off 44 balls, an innings that included seven fours and six sixes.
Supported by Calvin Watuwa’s lively 33 not out off 22 balls, the Rafters surged to 221/3, a total that proved well beyond the Kayakers’ reach.
In reply, Itanda Kayakers never recovered from a shaky start that saw them slump to 20/2 inside three overs. Although captain Christopher Kidega offered resistance with an aggressive 47 off 24 balls, the lack of partnerships and relentless pressure from the Rafters’ bowlers told.
Joseph Baguma starred with the ball, claiming 4/19, while Yunus Sowobi chipped in with 3/21 as the Kayakers were dismissed for 108 in 14 overs.

Afternoon Match: Karuma Rapids turn the tables
Bujjagali Rafters 83 all out (19 overs)
Karuma Rapids 87/3 (10.4 overs)
Result: Karuma Rapids won by 7 wickets
The afternoon fixture saw a complete reversal of fortunes for the Rafters as Karuma Rapids produced a disciplined and composed display to claim victory.
Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Bujjagali struggled from the outset. Fahad Mutagana fell early, and despite brief resistance from Robinson Obuya and Gerald Olipa, the Rafters slumped to 23/3 within four overs.
The middle order failed to recover, with wickets falling at regular intervals against tight bowling. Contributions from Simon Oketcho (15 off 29) and Yunus Sowobi (13 off 26) only delayed the inevitable, as the Rafters were bowled out for 83 in 19 overs.
Henry Ssenyondo led the Rapids’ bowling effort with an impressive 3/21, well supported by Kenneth Waiswa and Ochan Felix, who maintained pressure throughout the innings.
Chasing a modest target, Karuma Rapids briefly wobbled at 15/2 but quickly regained control. Charles Musemeza anchored the chase with an unbeaten 33 off 29 balls, while Cyrus Kakuru added a composed 26 not out off 19 deliveries. The pair guided the Rapids to 87/3 in just 10.4 overs.
