Reigning champions Côte d’Ivoire will launch their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 title defence on Wednesday evening with a Group F clash against a determined Mozambique side at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.
The Elephants arrive in Morocco as holders of the continental crown and will be keen to set the tone early, but they face a Mozambique team eager to make a strong statement against Africa’s best.
Fresh from a carefully structured build-up, Côte d’Ivoire head into the tournament calm, confident and focused. Head coach Emerse Faé insists, however, that his team’s belief is rooted not in past glory but in the work done behind the scenes.
“Our confidence does not come from being defending champions. It comes from the journey we’ve taken and the quality of our preparation. The players are focused, committed and fully invested in the mission ahead,” Faé said.
Balanced approach key for Elephants
Preparation for the champions was not entirely smooth, with the postponement of a FIFA window forcing the cancellation of two friendly matches. Faé, however, downplayed the disruption, stressing adaptability as a key requirement in tournament football.
“We had a long-term plan and, like all teams, we had to adapt. That will not be an excuse as we begin this competition,” he noted.
On the pitch, the Ivorian tactician emphasised the need for balance, combining defensive solidity with attacking efficiency.
“To win matches, you need a strong defensive foundation and the ability to score goals. We’ve worked on every aspect, both individually and collectively. To go far in this tournament, you must be a complete team,” he explained.
Captain Franck Kessié acknowledged the added pressure that comes with being champions but believes the squad is ready to handle expectations.
“We are a team everyone wants to beat, and that brings extra pressure. But we’ve prepared technically, mentally and physically. We are ready on and off the pitch, and determined to defend our title,” Kessié said.
Mozambique, making their sixth AFCON appearance, head into the encounter embracing the challenge. Head coach Chiquinho Conde believes his squad has matured and understands what is required at this level.
“Different generations have represented Mozambique over the years. This one has more experience. In a competition like this, starting well is vital, even against the reigning champions,” Conde said.
Veteran forward Elias Pelembe echoed his coach’s confidence, promising that the Mambas will not be overawed.
“We know we’re facing a very strong team, the champions of Africa. But that won’t stop us from playing our football. We want to score, take our chances and compete. It will be an open match, and anything can happen,” he said.
History slightly favours Côte d’Ivoire, who remain unbeaten against Mozambique in five previous official meetings, recording two wins and three draws. The Elephants also boast strong recent form, with 12 wins, three draws and five defeats in their last 20 matches, alongside 14 clean sheets. Notably, 80% of those games ended with fewer than 2.5 goals.
