African sides defy expectations as Cabo Verde and Egypt earn major World Cup results

Tournament debutants Cabo Verde stunned football fans around the world by holding former world champions Spain to a goalless draw in their opening Group H match at Atlanta Stadium.

Few observers gave the Blue Sharks any chance against one of the tournament favorites. However, the small island nation delivered a disciplined and courageous defensive display that frustrated Spain throughout the 90 minutes.

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, emerged as the hero of the occasion. The experienced shot-stopper produced a series of crucial saves to deny Spain and preserve one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far.

Spain dominated possession and created opportunities, particularly after teenage sensation Lamine Yamal entered the match in the second half. The 18-year-old injected energy and creativity into the Spanish attack, but Cabo Verde’s resilient defense refused to break.

The result marks one of the greatest achievements in Cabo Verdean football history, earning the nation its first-ever FIFA World Cup point and proving they can compete on the world’s biggest stage.

“We showed that we belong here,” was the message conveyed by a Cabo Verde side that exceeded all expectations and left Atlanta with a result that could have significant implications for Group H.

In Seattle, Egypt came within touching distance of recording their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory before settling for a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Belgium in Group G.

The Pharaohs made a dream start when midfielder Emam Ashour scored his first international goal in the 19th minute. The move was initiated by captain Mohamed Salah, who celebrated his 34th birthday by providing the assist.

Ashour controlled the ball brilliantly before firing a precise shot past Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to give Egypt a deserved lead and send their supporters into celebration.

For much of the match, Egypt looked set to rewrite their World Cup history. Prior to the encounter, the North Africans had never won a World Cup match and had spent only 29 minutes leading in the competition across their previous appearances.

Belgium, however, found renewed energy following the introduction of striker Romelu Lukaku in the second half. Just seconds after entering the field, Lukaku’s presence in the penalty area forced defender Mohamed Hany into an unfortunate own goal in the 66th minute, bringing Belgium level.

Despite late pressure from the Europeans, Egypt held firm to secure a valuable point against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.

Ashour’s outstanding performance earned him the Superior Player of the Match award, capping a memorable evening for the midfielder.
