Guard Adam Seiko made his debut for the Uganda men’s senior national basketball team, Silverbacks on Wednesday, 25th August 2021 as his side lost 93-55 to Senegal in their opening match of the 2021 FIBA AfroBasket at the Kigali Arena in Rwanda.
Seiko, 23 who plays for San Diego State Aztecs in the USA emerged Silverbacks’ top performer with an efficiency of +13 and shooting 4-of-9 after rising to the challenge in the fourth quarter. He managed a team high 12 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist.
Silverbacks trailed in all quarters but seemed to keep tabs with Senegal in the first two quarters as they slimly trailed 21-14 and 40-31 in quarter one and two respectively.
The last two quarters were rough for Uganda as Senegal ended third quarter with a 68-40 lead.
The final quarter saw Uganda attempt to launch a comeback and albeit picking positives on box out, rebounds coupled with a fighting spirit, Senegal claimed the points with a winning scoreline of 93-55.
Arthur Kaluma who made his second appearance for Silverbacks managed 8 points just like Ishmail Wainright while Eric Zziwa scored 9 points.
For Senegal, Gorgui Dieng led the scoring with 19 points. Ibrahim Faye managed 15 points while Branco Badiou had 17 points.
Uganda will attempt to make amends when they come up against Cameroon on Friday, 27th August.
Cameroon’s opening match against South Sudan was forfeited due to Covid-19 cases in their (Cameroon’s) camp & it’s not yet clear whether their match against Silverbacks will go on.
The top teams from each group will advance to the quarter finals while number two and three advance to the round of 16.
This is Uganda’s third appearance at the AfroBasket having qualified for and competed at the last two tournaments – Tunisia 2015 and Senegal/Tunisia 2017.
