After maiden KAGC win, Nsubuga exudes calm and confidence ahead of upcoming tournaments

Uganda’s Godfrey Nsubuga won the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) for the first time over the weekend after he posted three over par 219 to top the leaderboard at the Tea Fields Trophy at the par 72 Kericho Golf Club.

Nsubuga, handicap -2.5 was two shots ahead of Kenya Railways’ John Lejirma who finished second with 5 over par, and victory away from home meant that he relieved compatriot Michael Alunga of the title.

After victory at Kericho, Nsubuga now has his eyes on the Nandi Bears Open Shield scheduled for 14th-15th October at Nandi Bears Club in Kapsabet and two days later, he’ll be competing at the amateur event of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Open Golf Championship scheduled for 18th-21st at Uganda Golf Club in Kampala. Both events have World Amateur Golf Ranking points.

“I feel fine now. At least I have tested victory (at KAGC). Often I have been number two and three and finally getting into number one has given me a lot of confidence,” Nsubuga said adding that he stayed focused at the Kericho event and that’s what he will do at the Nandi event as well as at the Uganda Open.

“Currently I’m in tournament mood, I am playing tournaments week in week out. I am steady and all these I’m doing because I want to be very steady when the Uganda Open reaches,” Nsubuga said adding that winning the Uganda Open as well as improving his global ranking are his key targets as he is currently 390th globally.

For Nsubuga, he just wants to keep playing as he feels he is in the best shape of his life, thanks to the support of golfers as well as the Uganda Golf Union.

Nsubuga is feeling more confident than ever as he prepares to tee off at the upcoming championships. Despite recent setbacks, he believes that he is in excellent form and ready to compete against the best in the game.

Lejirma, winner of 2020 Uganda Open is the defending champion of the Nandi Bears Shield which is part of the KAGC penultimate 54-hole tournaments. He is likely to give Nsubuga a good run for his money but the Mheta Club star believes he is ready for any challenge.
