Basketball: Miracle’s Nangiro Hails Lokwameri For Inspiring Karamoja Girls

Miracle Eaglets small forward Moding Ruth Nangiro who joined the women’s Division 1 outfit early this year is one of the talented basketball players across various domestic leagues and divisions who come from the Karamoja region, found in the Northeast side of Uganda.

Nangiro, a former Makerere Sparks Captain during an interview with Miracle Basketball YouTube Channel highlighted how fellow small forward Zainah Lokwameri, who currently plays for Rwandan side The Hoops has inspired the girls in particular from the region to join and excel in the hoops game.

“She has inspired every girl out there from Karamoja more so in Moroto! She plays well and she has really gone far with her basketball, something we all look up to.”
“I have always looked up to her since High School and often told myself that I want to be like her or even get better,” Nangiro said.

The former UCU Lady Canons star recently helped The Hoops to their historic first title of the BK women’s basketball league following their stunning win over IPRC-Huye in this year’s final at Kigali Arena last month.

With Lokwameri yet to make a mark in Rwanda due to her short stints that side, the Gazelles (Uganda women’s senior national basketball team) forward is recently remembered for her days at UCU but Nangiro has remarked that she (Lokwameri) has been an inspiration to her and many basketball players from the Karamoja region.

Some of the Karamoja players across various leagues and divisions include; Loumo Moses, Lemukol Abraham, Moru Benazir, Nakiru Patricia, Ayere Brenda, Lokwameri Zainah (former), Arion Osama, Kevin, Moding Ruth, Odoki Eric, Kokedieng Jimmy, Lomongin Genevieve, Awidi Maria among others.

Nangiro also says that Gazelles duo of Sarah Ageno and Claire Lamunu are some of the players she looks up to and have in one way or the other inspired her career.
“I played with Sarah at the University Games. I loved her leadership because she was our Captain; she was so exemplary and looking at a player working hard and being patient with the ball is lovely.”

“And for Claire, she has inspired everyone, I mean, who doesn’t want to be like her?” Nangiro noted.
Nangiro also revealed that she hopes to make it to the national team in the near future and believes that it could happen soon.

Nangiro will make her competitive debut at Miracle Eaglets next year/season after 2020 became a dead year due to COVID-19.

She now hopes to improve on her handles and work with other players as a team to ensure that they get good results.

Miracle Eaglets, a women’s Division 1 basketball league outfit will be seeking a great display next season as they seek to climb the ladder to the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).
