Byekwaso picks positives from Saudi Arabia, shifts focus to CECAFA

Uganda U-23 national football team, Kobs lost 2-0 to Saudi Arabia in their final friendly match played on Monday at the Prince Faisal Bin Abdulaziz Stadium, Riyadh City. Abdullah Abdrahman and Hashim Alyami scored the two goals for Saudi Arabia, each coming in either half.

Earlier on, the two sides had settled for a barren stalemate in their first friendly after both firing blanks.

The camp provided the final build up on the training tour in Saudi Arabia as the team (Uganda) prepares for the upcoming CECAFA senior Challenge Cup.

For Uganda’s Coach Morley Byekwaso, the two games have given him as his side lots of lessons as they prepare for the upcoming zonal event.

‘We have learnt a lot from the two games played against Saudi Arabia. During the second game, we improved a lot offensively as we created a lot of chances,” Byekwaso told FUFA website.

According to Byekwaso, his forwards were not ruthless infront of goal that’s why they couldn’t find the back of the net from two outings.

“Finishing disappointed us and we have to work on that,” Byekwaso said adding that the defense also needs to step up.

“We need to rectify the defense as well because we conceded two goals (in the second game). We have learnt a lot from the two matches as we prepare for the CECAFA tournament,’ Byekwaso stated.

The CECAFA U-23 Championship will kick-off on July 17th, 2021 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. The competition was initially slated to start on July 3rd, 2021 but was postponed by a fortnight.

Uganda line up Vs Saudi Arabia:

Charles Lukwago (G.K), Enock Walusimbi (Captain), Abdul Azizi Kayondo, Musa Ramathan, Peter Magambo, Bobosi Byaruhanga, Steven Sserwadda, Saidi Kyeyune, Richard Basangwa, Isma Mugulusi, Steven Mukwala

Substitutes: Hassan Matovu (G.K), Eric Kibowa (G.K), George Kaddu, Najib Yiga, Bright Anukani, Karim Watambala, Samuel Ssenyonjo, Derrick Kakooza, Salim Abdallah, Julius Poloto, Kenneth Ssemakula, Saddam Masereka
