The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) launched the Preliminary Stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup for the 2024/25 season with an official draw held on Thursday, July 11, at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
A total of 52 clubs from 41 African nations participated in the draw. The competition is currently held by Egyptian powerhouses Zamalek SC, who clinched the title for the second time last season.
The preliminary stages of the CAF Confederation Cup are structured into two rounds. The First Preliminary Round will see 40 matches played, while the Second Preliminary Round, consisting of 32 matches, will determine the 16 teams that will advance to the Group Stages.
In the First Preliminary Round, 12 of the highest-ranked clubs are exempt and will only compete in the Second Preliminary Round. These clubs are RS Berkane (Morocco), Asec Mimosas (Côte d’Ivoire), Stade Malien (Mali), Enyimba (Nigeria), Zamalek (Egypt), USM Alger (Algeria), Simba SC (Tanzania), El Masry (Egypt), CS Sfaxien (Tunisia), AS Vita (DR Congo), Sekhukhune United (South Africa), and FC Lupopo (DR Congo).
Additionally, ASC Jaraaf (Senegal), AS Otoho (Benin), and Zesco United (Zambia) will enter the Second Preliminary Round due to their higher ranking.
The First Preliminary Round’s first legs are scheduled between August 16-18, with the return legs between August 23-25, 2024. The Second Preliminary Round will follow with first legs from September 13-15, and the return legs from September 20-22, 2024, to finalize the Group Stage lineup.
