Mariam Nakabugo captained Kawempe Muslim SS to the 2019 Fresh Dairy secondary schools games, Girls football title after their 5-4 penalty win over stunning St Noa Girls school-Zana on Saturday in the tense final played at the Mbale municipal stadium.

Kawempe that ejected Mukono Bishops and St Noa that saw off previous champions Mukono High at semi finals, played to a barren normal time stalemate before Kawempe won 5-4 in penalties after goal keeper Juliet Adeke saved Mastullah Nakku’s kick.

After receiving the winners’ trophy, Nakabugo, who scored the winning penalty, said that it was mission accomplished and a good remembrance for her school as she leaves this year.

The S.6 student has been part of the school team since her first year at Kawempe in 2013. “I am super excited. I badly needed to see us win this title as a remembrance for the school; that is why I had to step up and take the last kick no matter the pressure that comes with it. I am happy to have captained the team to victory after two years of no trophy at the national tournament,” noted the center back, who commanded her defense to finish this year’s championship without conceding any goal as goal keeper Adeke scooped the best goal keeper award.

Nakabugo, currently in S.6 will no longer be part of the team after her UACE exams this year and is leaving along with other four in similar class including; Anita Namata, Juliet Adeke, Rehema Nakabuye and Rehema Adubango.

“I am confident there are good players in lower classes to lift the school flag higher. Am happy that I have won the national title in S.1, S.2, S.3, and S.6; only missed out in S.4 and S.6,” added Nakabugo.

According to Kawempe Muslim SS Coach Ayub Khalifah, the S.6 players leaving this year will create a vacuum but he has already started improvising ways to bridge the gap.

“Of course, we shall miss them but I am grateful for their contribution throughout. We have young players that we have introduced and I have high hopes in them,” he said. Kawempe also finished third in hockey Boys.

The Fresh Dairy secondary schools ball games ran for a week at Mbale SS and the winning teams were on Saturday awarded with trophies and two sets of jersey per participating team by sponsors Fresh Dairy. The two finalists in each discipline will represent the country in the East African games in Arusha, Tanzania.
