The Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, is bracing for a defining moment as the Uganda Cranes prepare to face South Africa in their final Group C fixture of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 on Monday.
For the Cranes, it’s simple: avoid defeat and history will be made. A draw is enough to secure passage into the quarterfinals, something Uganda has never achieved in six previous CHAN appearances. Victory, meanwhile, would ensure they finish as Group C leaders.
Uganda currently sits on top of the group with six points after Friday’s dramatic matches ended in stalemates. Algeria held Guinea to a 1–1 draw thanks to Sofiane Bayazid’s late strike, while South Africa were left frustrated in a 0–0 draw against Niger, with VAR denying them two penalty claims.
The results leave Uganda in pole position with six points, Algeria second on five, and South Africa third, also on five but trailing on goal difference. Niger, with two points, are out of contention.
Monday’s clash carries huge stakes. South Africa must win to qualify, while Algeria can book their spot by defeating Niger in Nairobi. For Uganda, it’s more than just qualification—it’s a chance to erase years of heartbreak at the group stage.
The Cranes, however, will be without key midfielder Joel Sserunjogi, suspended after picking up two yellow cards. His absence is a setback, but coach Morley Byekwaso is expected to lean on squad depth and the electric backing of the Namboole faithful.
South Africa’s attacking quality remains a threat, but their struggles to unlock Niger exposed weaknesses that Uganda will look to exploit. The Cranes are expected to adopt a measured approach, balancing caution with ambition, knowing that even a point will be enough to spark celebrations across the country.
