Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – The Ugandan Cricket Cranes have faced significant challenges in their preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 due to unfavorable weather conditions in Port of Spain.
As they gear up for their final Group C match against New Zealand, scheduled for June 15 at 3:30 AM (EAT) at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando, the team has been hindered by persistent rain and damp conditions.
Since their arrival in Trinidad & Tobago, the Ugandan squad has had to quickly adapt to a stark contrast in weather from their previous location in Georgetown. While Georgetown presented hot, humid, and slightly rainy conditions, Port of Spain has been predominantly cold, chilly, and wet with only brief moments of sunshine. This has made effective practice sessions challenging, with significant rainfall affecting the team’s ability to train outdoors.
Despite these setbacks, the Ugandan coaching staff remains determined to prepare the players adequately. The team is recovering from their intense match against the West Indies at Providence Stadium and the subsequent travel from Georgetown. To maximize the limited training opportunities, the team has pushed hard to maintain their form and fitness.
On June 10, the Cricket Cranes had a light workout at the Bryan Davis Indoor Cricket Centre at Queen’s Park Oval. The following day, they practiced at the Sir Frank Worrell Oval at the University of the West Indies, approximately 10 kilometers from their base at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Although the training was optional, there was a full turnout, except for vice-captain Riazat Ali Shah and opening bowler Cosmas Kyewuta. Strength and Conditioning Coach Emmanuel Oroma led a comprehensive warm-up and bronco session to keep the players physically engaged.
Unfortunately, the training conditions were less than ideal. The practice square and wicket remained damp, preventing a productive workout for both batters and bowlers.
Uganda’s performance in their debut appearance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has seen mixed results. They secured a victory against Papua New Guinea by three wickets but suffered heavy losses to the West Indies and Afghanistan by 134 runs and 125 runs, respectively. As they prepare to face New Zealand, the team remains focused on overcoming these challenges and putting up a strong performance in their final group stage match.
