Uganda Cranes captain Denis Masinde Onyango has announced his retirement from the Uganda Cranes.
Onyango made the announcement via his Social Media accounts on Tuesday, April 12.
“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from international football. After much consideration, my family, managers and I, decided it was in my best interest to hang my gloves on my beloved Cranes. Big thanks to every Ugandan over the years.” Read the post.
His retirement comes barely a week after another Cranes player, Hassan Wasswa announced he was also leaving the team after 13 years.
Onyango played for the Cranes since 2015, managing 75 caps.
Onyango who features for South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns played at two AFCON tournaments, captaining the side in the 2019 edition in Cameroon.
He is an icon on the African continent and was voted the best African based player of the year in 2016.
Onyango’s last game for the Cranes was the 1-0 loss away to Malawi in the 2022 AFCON Qualifiers.
He leaves a legacy that will be hard for anyone to replicate.
