Legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango is officially back in Uganda Cranes colors after coming out of international retirement ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The announcement came today as Head Coach Paul Put unveiled the 26-man squad set to face Somalia and Mozambique next month at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Onyango’s return is the standout headline from the squad list, marking his first call-up since retiring from international football in April 2021. The 39-year-old last featured for the Cranes during the 2021 AFCON qualification campaign and now reclaims his spot in goal with the aim of helping Uganda secure a place at the global showpiece.
“Having Denis back is a massive boost,” said Coach Put. “His experience, leadership, and presence in the dressing room are invaluable. We’re preparing for two critical matches, and his return gives us extra confidence.”
Onyango, widely regarded as Uganda’s greatest goalkeeper, captained the Cranes during their historic AFCON 2017 run and is remembered for his commanding performances, particularly in qualifiers and high-stakes matches.
He will compete for the starting spot alongside Salim Magoola, forming a powerful and experienced goalkeeping unit that will look to anchor Uganda’s defensive stability.
The squad features 11 locally based players, including several from the recent TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 squad. Uganda will host Somalia on Friday, September 5, followed by a clash with Mozambique on Monday, September 8—both matches scheduled for 7:00 PM at Namboole.
The Cranes will begin residential camp on Sunday, August 31, at FUFA Hotel, Kisaasi, as preparations intensify.
