Egypt booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in the modern tournament after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw at Dallas Stadium on Friday.
The Pharaohs, who had never progressed beyond the group stage in the modern World Cup era, held their nerve in the shootout after extra time failed to separate the two sides, marking one of the greatest achievements in Egyptian football history.
Emam Ashour gave Egypt the perfect start when he headed home Karim Hafez’s pinpoint cross in the 13th minute, capping an impressive first-half display by the African side.
Australia nearly stunned Egypt inside five minutes after Cristian Volpato rattled the crossbar, but the Pharaohs quickly settled into the contest and took control. Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir was also called into action before halftime, producing key saves to preserve Egypt’s slender advantage.
Egypt missed a golden opportunity to double their lead moments after the restart when Omar Marmoush was sent through on goal but dragged his effort narrowly wide.
The miss proved costly as Australia restored parity in the 55th minute through an unfortunate Mohamed Hany own goal. Attempting to clear a dangerous free-kick delivery, the Egyptian defender inadvertently headed the ball past his own goalkeeper.
With momentum swinging Australia’s way, Egypt coach Hossam Hassan made several tactical substitutions, introducing fresh legs as the Pharaohs gradually regained control.
The Africans came closest to finding a winner in regulation time when Rami Rabia met a Mohamed Salah cross with a powerful header, only to be denied by an excellent save from the Australian goalkeeper.
Egypt continued to dominate proceedings in extra time, with Salah and Haitham Hassan leading repeated attacks, but Australia’s resilient defence held firm to force penalties.
In the shootout, Egypt showed remarkable composure. Mahmoud Saber, Rami Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdel-Maguid all converted their spot-kicks, while Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington failed to score, handing the Pharaohs a memorable 4-2 victory.
The triumph sends Egypt into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of Argentina’s clash against Cape Verde on July 7 in Atlanta.
The result also represents another significant milestone for African football, with Egypt joining Morocco among the continent’s representatives in the knockout stages of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
For Egypt, the victory writes a new chapter in the nation’s football history. Having featured at the World Cup in 1934, 1990 and 2018 without advancing beyond the first round in the modern format, the current generation has finally broken new ground.
