Pepsi University Football League

Quarter-finals, First leg

Wednesday, 3pm

MUBS vs Uganda Martyrs, Nakawa

The 2019 Pepsi University football league returns this week with the eight teams in quarter finals seeking to take another step towards glory. This Wednesday afternoon, the focus will be on former Champions showdown between Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi (UMU) at Nakawa in the first leg of their quarter final.

The fixture is expected to serve the fans who were craving for action the best of action. The two sides last met in the 2017 final at Namboole stadium which Uganda Martyrs won 2-0 to lift their maiden title under Coach Shafiq Bisaso.

Prior, the two sides had again met in the 2015 final which MUBS won 4-0 to lift their second trophy of the competition.

MUBS coach Ayiekoh Charles expects an entertaining game and is confident his side will take home advantage into account as they chase a record third Pepsi University Football League title.

“It is long time since we lifted the Pepsi UFL trophy but this year, I feel that we have a very good squad that can bring it home again. Last year and in the first round this year, the squad was still weak but we have strengthened in all areas with some very good recruits. I am optimistic we shall make it all the way to the final,” he said.

“Uganda Martyrs are a good team. They are no longer the team that used to be easily beaten and they managed to beat us at Namboole in 2017,” he added.

Out of the 7 games the two sides have faced off, MUBS has won six and lost once with the other ending in stalemate. This gives Ayiekoh confidence that they can make it seven wins this Wednesday.

Meanwhile, UMU Coach Noah Mugerwa has different ideas about the game despite having it mind that they are facing a stronger side.

“MUBS are a strong team especially when they are playing at home. But we are also a strong team and we won in our last meeting at Namboole stadium. I expect it will be a tough game but we are definitely buoyed for victory,” said Mugerwa.

At group stage, UMU led group B while MUBS came as runners up in group D behind Uganda Christian University (UCU). The league will continue on Friday with St Lawrence University (SLAU) hosting YMCA Comprehensive Institute at Kavule.
