The Ugandan football community has been plunged into mourning following the death of SC Villa captain David Owori, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a suspected thug attack in Makindye.
Owori had been admitted to Case Clinic after he was reportedly assaulted by unknown assailants near his home on Monday evening. Despite receiving medical treatment, he later passed away.
SC Villa confirmed the tragic news in a statement, describing the loss of their captain as heartbreaking and extending condolences to his family, teammates, supporters, and the wider football fraternity.
According to reports, the attack occurred at around 8:00 p.m. near Owori’s residence in Makindye. He was rushed to Case Clinic in critical condition, where medical personnel fought to save his life.
Owori will be remembered for his immense contribution to SC Villa, particularly during the club’s historic 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title-winning campaign that ended a two-decade wait for league glory and delivered the club’s record-extending 17th championship.
News of his death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from across Uganda’s sporting landscape, with fellow players, coaches, fans, and football administrators remembering him as a committed leader and influential figure both on and off the pitch.
Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
