A week ago, local online newsportal Football256 revealed that they will be holding the inaugural ‘Best Of The Season Awards’ where they will be recognizing top players in Ugandan football for the just concluded season.

According to Football256 website, the winners across 13 categories were to be announced digitally or virtually on Friday, July 16 2021.

However, the planned event has suffered a major setback after the management of the FUFA Super League Limited/Uganda Premier League warned organizers to halt the exercise or else legal action will be taken against them.

“…where as the Uganda Premier League appreciates your intention in recognizing the excelling and or outstanding football players in the league, it’s incumbent to have you notified as we hereby do that the StarTimes Uganda Premier League and other auxillary and incidental products that participate in the same are products are products and a legal property of the league whose exploitation can only be with consent and permission of the owners of the league,” part of the letter from FUFA Super League/Uganda Premier League addressed to Football256 said.

The letter adds that the league organizes its own awards for various categories and the exercise has already been assigned to a third party by contract on such terms that are exclusive and cannot permit another party to do the same or run parallel awards.

“…we hereby do notify you that your action of the purported Football256 Best of the Season Awards 2021…amount to an act of passing off and breach for which legal action can rise,” another part of the letter read.

Initially, the Best Of The Season Awards were to honor the following categories; Best of the season, Striker of the Season, Midfielder of the Season, Defender of the Season, Goalkeeper of the Season, Young Player of the Season, Breakthrough of the Season, Coach of the season, Fans of the Season, Vibrant club on social media, Club Media team of the season and Best XI of the Season.
