Carlisle United have bolstered their backline with the signing of seasoned Ugandan international defender Bevis Mugabi on a two-year contract, as the club continues to shape its squad ahead of the new campaign.
The 30-year-old, who most recently featured for Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus, brings a wealth of experience and versatility to the Cumbrians’ defence. Mugabi made 17 appearances and scored twice during his short stint in the Cypriot First Division, adding a continental chapter to an already well-travelled career.
Born in England but proudly donning the colours of the Uganda national team, Mugabi has earned 20 caps and found the net once for the Cranes. He shot to wider prominence during his time in Scotland, where he spent five solid seasons with Motherwell. Known for his aerial prowess and tough tackling, he made 125 appearances and scored seven goals for the Scottish Premiership side.
But Mugabi’s journey to Brunton Park began even earlier. After coming through the youth systems at Fulham and Southampton, he got his senior break at Yeovil Town in 2016. Over three seasons at Huish Park, he established himself as a consistent performer, making over a century of appearances and scoring five times.
Carlisle United’s Head of Recruitment, Martin Foyle, hailed the signing, saying:
“Bevis is an experienced defender and he is an excellent addition to the squad. He brings a wealth of experience from Scotland, abroad and international football, and he has a fantastic attitude which will help to drive the standards even higher on and off the pitch.”
Mugabi’s arrival is part of Carlisle’s broader recruitment push this summer, joining a growing list of new faces at Brunton Park as the Blues aim to build a resilient and competitive side.
The deal is subject to international clearance, but fans are already excited by what the towering defender could bring to the heart of United’s defence.
