FUFA partners with UEFA to organise football fitness course

FUFA has partnered with UEFA through the UEFA Assist Programme to organise a 5-day football fitness course that will take place at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru from 8th-12th August 2022.

The course will be conducted by UEFA Fitness4Football Coordinator Paul D. Balsom (Dr Med. Sci) from Sweden.

The course is tailored to be Level I of the progressive structure of two other levels (level 2 and 3) that will be developed later and with progressive requirements.

It will be attended by suitable candidates from clubs in the 1st and 2nd division (Uganda Premier League and FUFA Big League).

At end of the course, each participant will be awarded a FUFA Level I Football Fitness Certificate and qualify as Fitness coaches for a FUFA License.

FUFA has set requirements for this level as here under;

*Minimum O’ Level Certificate of Education.
*Must be able to listen, read and write in the language of course instruction.
*Playing experience and football knowledge is an added advantage.
*Must be attached to a club or field support role like Local trainer of trainers.
Must be physically fit to attend course practical sessions.

About the Instructor

Paul D Balsom is a UEFA Pro License coach and Head of UEFA’s Fitness4Football advisory group.

He graduated from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm with a PhD (Dr. med sci) in 1996, which focused on The Physiology of Intermittent Exercise. For the last 25 years, he has provided best practice performance enhancing scientific support solutions in professional football, at both club and national team (Sweden) level, developing the physical/fitness aspect of team performance in order to gain a competitive advantage.

As Performance Manager with the Swedish National team, he has attended 6 consecutive UEFA Euro final tournaments and 3 World Cup final tournaments. Between 2008 and 2021, Paul was part of the backroom staff at Leicester City F.C. and in 2016, was Head of Sports Science and Performance Analysis when they became only the 6th team to win the English Premier League at 5000/1 outsiders.

In 2017, Paul was also appointed Head of Performance Innovation at the King Power owned football club OH Leuven who, in 2020, were promoted to the top 1A league in Belgium.

In addition to his current roles at the Swedish Football Association and UEFA, Paul also works as a Performance Consultant for Tigres UANL in Mexico.
