In his address to the nation on the way forward to curb the surging rise in Covid-19 infections and deaths, President Yoweri Museveni among others announced a ban of sports activities for 42 days (six weeks) as a preventive measure to curb the pandemic from spreading further.
The banning of sports activities means that local activities and competitions have been brought to a halt with the sector already having challenges due to the high cost of management in the current times.
For local football governing body, Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), they have suspended the Uganda Premier League (UPL) 2020/21 season matches slated for this weekend and are yet to make a final decision on the way forward.
“FUFA wishes to announce that all Star Times UPL matches scheduled for Saturday 19th June 2021 and Sunday 20th June 2021 have been postponed.”
“FUFA will give further guidance on the remaining match days in the near future,” the federation said in a statement.
Should the league end prematurely, Express FC will be crowned champions for they lead the 16-team table with 58 points, one point ahead of second placed URA FC and two points ahead of third placed Vipers SC, who are also title holders. The three teams have all played 26 matches.
Fourth placed KCCA FC have 48 points after 27 games and won 2-6 on Friday against Kitara FC.
Vipers SC were crowned 2019/20 UPL champions after league was ended prematurely in March 2020 during the first ban on sports.
