Every sports addict in Uganda wants to see more sports loving members elected into parliament for better budget negotiations. In that line, more sportsmen and women have set sights on capturing Parliamentary seats come 2021 general elections.

Minister Kiiza

The Red Pepper has learned that FUFA Executive member and Head of marketing Rogers Byamukama has set his sight on the Masindi municipality seat and looks favorite to oust the incumbent, Hon. Minister Earnest Monday Kiiza, who beat former minister Kabakumba Matsiko to the seat.

Byamuka, who has interacted much with the community through football, supporting local clubs and involving in youth and women development projects, wanted to contest on an NRM ticket last time but was controversially beaten by the current area legislator in the NRM Party polls.

In an exclusive interview, Byamukama, a marketing guru, confirmed that he will contest for the MP seat albeit remaining coy on which ticket he will contest.

“I am already at the ground. I did not leave my people since last elections. I want to serve people, it was a job lost last time and that is you could not see me in courts. If the people that they missed out and regret, they will vote for me. I have a clear vision of our area in terms of development and this is what I will present to the Masindi municipality people in my manifesto which I believe is the most suiting to our area,” he said.

“We shall cross the bridge when we get there. It is not all about the party, but serving people,” noted Byamukama when asked whether he will return to seek the NRM ticket.

The incumbent, who is also the State Minister in charge of Bunyoro affairs, has held onto the position since 2011. He is the Managing director of Bunyoro broadcasting services, Earnest Publishers and Chairman Bunyoro Parliamentary caucus.

The Masindi district NRM chairman also served as speaker Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom and Chairperson Masindi Town Council.

The ministers’ main undoing is that he openly voted for the mobile money tax and the controversial constitutional amendment to lift the 75 year clause which allowed president Museveni to contest again come 2021.

The majority people of Masindi felt betrayed by their aging legislator and vowed to pay back with the ballot.
