Over the weekend, a total of 16 girls’ rugby clubs comprised of U20 and seniors competed in the Rotary Rugby End Gender based violence tournament at Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala.
The one-day event held on Saturday was centered around educating the players on gender-based violence and building their confidence through the sport.
The Rotary Club of Kisugu hosted the tournament in partnership with the Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services which attracted teams from all the four regions of the country.
The event that was attended by a good number of people was split into two categories, that is; Under 20 and seniors. Each category was split into two groups of four.
Mbale side She Wolves won the U-20 category after beating Kitgum Queens 7-0 in the final. The former had posted the same score against Kisubi Lady Pacers in one of the semifinals while the Kitgum side had beaten Nile Leopards 10-00 in the other semi-final.

However, it was Nile Leopards’ Olive Onyiru who was named U-20 MVP while her teammate Tina Akello took the top score’s boot with five tries.
In the senior ladies category, Thunderbirds who were playing in their own backyard beat Avengers 26-05 in the final to come out of the tournament unbeaten following their clean sweep at the group stage.

Earlier in the semifinals, Thunderbirds beat Ewes 40-00 in one of the semifinals while Avengers had posted a 31-00 victory against Nile Rapids.
Hon. Dr. Miria Matembe gave a keynote speech at the event telling the girls that; “Nothing will prevent God’s purpose for your life.Stop regretting now. Tell God thank you because I’m the best creation.”

The tournament was graced by men’s national teams players who heaped praise on both the youngsters and senior ladies noting that the women’s game has a very bright future.
