*Hand the UPL title to Express – Vipers’ boss Mulindwa*
Vipers SC Patron Dr. Lawrence Mulinda has asked the Uganda Premier League to exercise the 75% rule and hand Express FC this season’s league title.
Dr. Mulindwa made the strong remarks during an interview with Sanyuka TV on Monday, June 23 at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.
The 2020/21 season was halted earlier this month after the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ordered for a 42-day lockdown on Sporting activities due to a surge in COVID-19 infections.
However, it is understood that the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) have been in negotiations with government officials including the Prime Minister, asking for football to be given the greenlight to conclude the current season.
Speaking on Monday, Mulindwa said that their is no need to engage the Prime Minister because she will not be the one to remove COVID-19.
“There is no need to talk to the Prime Minister. Even if she allows, will she the one responsible for removing Covid19?” Mulindwa said.
“How do you trust those players playing against each other? Even if you say there is vaccination, it’s not treatment so there can’t be assurance. And with poverty in our clubs, which ones are ready to do regular testing? We shouldn’t risk the life of Ugandans for the sake of that thing called ‘A Cup’.”
Mulindwa went ahead and advised that clubs should be left to prepare for next season by declaring Express the champions of the league.
“Clubs should be left to go prepare for the next season instead of wasting time on the current campaign.”
“I want to advise the Federation and the people at UPL just as they applied the 75% rule last season, they should do it now. In fact they should have done it yesterday to declare Express FC Champions of this current season. They shouldn’t waste time. The rule is very clear and should be applied.”
“Anyone going to represent us on the continent will need ample time to prepare, buying players, looking for funds, the earlier we know who is going for champions the better.”
Express FC lead the current table standings with 58 points, one and two better than second and third placed URA and Vipers respectively with four league games to play.
The Uganda Cup is one of the other football competitions that was yet to be concluded alongside the FUFA Big League.
