Lugazi FC secured their first win of the 2024/25 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season with a 1-0 triumph over Express FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Tuesday.
Sam Ssemugugu’s first-half goal sealed the victory, marking a major milestone for both the team and their interim coach, Oliver Mbekeka, who became the first woman to manage a top-flight team in Uganda.
In a high-tempo match, Lugazi’s Freedom Mungudit created the decisive moment in the 26th minute, weaving through Express’ defense and delivering a perfect cross for Ssemugugu to head home. The goal was met with jubilant celebrations, with Mbekeka sharing a memorable embrace with her players on the sidelines.
This crucial victory lifts Lugazi from the bottom of the table to 13th place with five points from six games, while Express remain in fifth with eight points, four behind league leaders NEC FC.
