Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ITC) solutions provider has unveiled a Shs250m partnership for the 2019 MTN Kampala marathon set for November 24 starting at the Kololo independence grounds.

Runners will participate in four categories of races, including a full marathon (42km), 21kms, 10kms, 5kms  and wheelchair race. Huawei will have more than 250 staff taking part in the marathon –starting with regional half marathons in Soroti, Arua and Masaka respectively. “We shall run for maternal health once again. One out of every 49 women die of a maternal complication related to pregnancy in Uganda and it is the highest in the world. This explains why we have continued to sponsor this marathon,” noted Liujiawei, the managing director of Huawei-Uganda. MTN Action chief marketing officer Sen Somdev hailed Huawei for the sponsorship. “MTN-Uganda lauds Huawei for its enthusiasm to ensure that the marathon continues to be a resounding success. “With partners like Huawei, we have positively impacted communities from the proceeds raised from the MN Kampala marathon. Our longstanding work relationship with Huawei has brought forth innovative digital solutions which have transformed the digital landscape for Uganda –and has certainly contributed to our vision of delivering a bold new digital world to our customers,” noted Somdev.

“There are an estimated 336 deaths per 100,000 live births making Uganda’s mortality rate one of the highest in the world. It is why proceeds of the marathon this year will still be used to improve maternity wards in five health center IV facilities across the country,” he added.

From resettling displaced people by war in northern Uganda to relocating mudslide victims in Bududa, from delivering clean water and improving sanitation in communities and schools to improving maternal health, the proceeds from the MTN Kampala marathon have made their humble impact in helping communities improve their quality of living.
