The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) and the Kingdom of Buganda has announced the 2024 Kabaka Coronation Rugby 7s, set to take place at the Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku this weekend.
The Kabaka Coronation Rugby 7s Cup, first held in 2017, returns after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to spread the game of rugby as a community sport.
The tournament will feature traditional dances, music, and sport, showcasing the vibrant culture of Buganda.
This tournament, organized by Beyond Sports Organisation, will bring together top rugby teams to compete in an action-packed 7s format.
The event celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Buganda and the coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, who marks his 31st year since being crowned.
The theme for this year’s tournament, “Men Against AIDS to Save the Girl Child,” highlights the importance of community engagement and social responsibility.
The event will feature men’s and women’s teams competing for titles, with activities designed to raise awareness about AIDS prevention and support for the girl child.
Participating teams include EWES, Avengers, Kisubi Lady Pacers for the women’s division, and Rams, Mongers, Pirates, Buffaloes, Buddu Select, Walukuba Barbarians, and Pirates II for the men’s division.
The event will run from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with general admission tickets priced at 5K UGX and VIP tickets at 20K UGX.
“We are excited to host the Kabaka Coronation Rugby 7s Cup, which not only celebrates rugby but also underscores our commitment to social causes,” said Godwin Kayangwe, President of the Uganda Rugby Union. “We invite all rugby enthusiasts and the general public to join us for a day of sport, culture, and community.”
