The Orthodox Archbishop Metropolitan Yonah Lwanga will host Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga Mayiga to lunch at his prestigious home in Kiyindi when the Katikiro (Premier) of Buganda presides over the first outing of the 2019 Kabaka royal boat regatta this Saturday at Kiyindi landing site.

The Katikiro will arrive in Kiyindi at 10am, according to Eng, Ben Misagga, the organising committee chairman.

He will then plant trees at three local schools as a sign of promotion forestation and re-forestation before officially flagging off the boat regatta competition.

“All is set and we are excited about this day. The competitors are ready, security is beefed and the excitement at the ground is massive. I call upon the Kingdom people and sports men to come and join the Katikiro as we enjoy one of Buganda’s biggest traditional sports that is under revival,” noted Misagga after his final visiting the host venue on Wednesday.

The Kabaka (King) of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II confirmed a new date for this year’s Kabaka royal boat regatta, putting the finals on June 8 at Nabugabo sand beach, Masaka and he will be the chief guest.

However before the finals, there will be qualifiers; with the first one at Kiyindi landing site this Saturday with nine teams expected to compete in their counties (Masaza).

These include; Buvuma, Kyaggwe, Buluri, Bulemezi, Singo, Gomba, Kyadondo, Busiro and Bugerere. The other qualifier event will be at Mulungu landing site, Munyonyo on May 30th and this will be graced by the Kingdom’s minister for youth and sports Owek.

Henry Sekabembe Kiberu. “We shall have 18 teams competing at both Kiyindi and Mulungu and from each event; we shall take the top three to the finals. At the last qualifier due April 22 (Easter Monday) at Nabugabo sand beach in Masaka, 12 teams will be picked from participating teams to make a total of 20 teams that will compete in the finals in front of the Kabaka,” explained Misagga, who has promised better organisation in this year’s edition.

The Kabaka royal boat regatta was revived by the Katikiro in 2016 and Kyagwge were the winners before Kabula County won the following year.

The competition that was not held last year is meant to unite the kingdom people, sensitize about HIV/Aids and encourage people around lakes to enjoy water life whilst economically fully utilize the water resources.
