Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have been announced as hosts for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This development was confirmed on Wednesday by the Confederation of African Football (CA) President Patrice Motsepe during their executive committee meeting held in Cairo, Egypt.
The three East African nations had earlier submitted a joint bid under the “Pamoja Bid” and it has now a reality. Morocco will host the 2025 edition.
The trio of countries beat off stiff competition from the likes of Senegal to win the tournament hosting rights, and this will be the first time that the three nations have ever hosted the tournament.
CAF President celebrated the news saying that the “future of African football has never been brighter.”
For the 2027 edition, Namibia had joined forces to partner with Botswana but the former pulled out in the later stages given the latter no chance to win the bid.
Zambia and Burkina Faso had interests of a joint bid but didn’t submit their paper work formally.
For the 2025 edition that was awarded to Morocco, Algeria had strong interest earlier on and were strong contenders but withdrew their bid.
The withdrawal of the Nigeria-Benin bid meant that Morocco went unopposed.
The 2025 edition was stripped off Guinea in October last year after CAF saying that their snail paced developments caused uncertainty whether they would be ready on time or not.
