Matchday Three of the Cricket Uganda Men’s 50-Over League continues on Sunday with several key fixtures across the Gold, Silver and Bronze categories as teams look to build early momentum in the new season.
The weekend action will see clubs across the country battle for important points, with some sides aiming to maintain strong starts while others seek to recover from mixed opening results.
One of the headline encounters will see newly promoted Mukono Warriors face Tornado Bees in a Gold Category clash at Lugogo Cricket Oval. Mukono Warriors, who recently earned promotion to Division One, are looking to establish themselves among the top sides with a blend of experienced players and emerging talent.
Tornado Bees come into the game buoyed by a Matchday One victory over Ceylon Lions and will rely on their aggressive batting approach to maintain momentum. However, they will be without Cosmas Kyewuta, who is away on national team duty, while Kenyan international Morris Auma Omollo is available for selection.
At Entebbe Cricket Oval, Aboojo will take on Rounders in another compelling Gold Category fixture. Rounders remain one of the more established sides in domestic cricket, known for their disciplined bowling attack that often controls the middle overs.
The side will, however, be without several players who have moved to other clubs, including Steven Wabwose, Jonathan Nyiiro, Siraje Nsubuga, Tembo Arnold Zubairi and Brian Mark Masaba. Kunsa Cyrus is also unavailable due to Cricket Uganda development duty in the north.
Rounders have strengthened their squad with the return of Richard Sohera, Paul Mulongo and Emmanuel Sebowa, and the team has been preparing for the season at Kinetic Cricket Oval.
Aboojo will be hoping to take advantage of the changes within the Rounders squad as they chase an early-season statement victory. Last season the two teams shared the spoils, with Aboojo winning the first meeting by 72 runs before Rounders bounced back with a three-wicket victory in the reverse fixture.
Aboojo will miss Pascal Murungi due to suspension and Mathew Musinguzi, who has joined Ceylon Lions, but the side has added fresh talent promoted from Entale Schools.
Elsewhere in the Gold Category, defending champions Kutchi Tigers host Ceylon Lions at Serenity Oval in Kamengo in what promises to be a competitive contest between two of Uganda’s top domestic sides.
Kutchi Tigers will be aiming to start strongly as they continue their push to maintain dominance in the top division, while Ceylon Lions will be eager to bounce back after a defeat on the opening matchday. Steven Wabwose is set to make his debut for Kutchi, while Ceylon Lions will be without Cyrus Kakuru who is away on national duty.
In the Bronze A Category, Centurion travel to Jinja to face Jinja Secondary School at the Jinja SSS Cricket Oval. Centurion, formerly Budo Cricket Club, opened their campaign with a win over Mukono Development and will be looking to build on that momentum.
Jinja SSS, meanwhile, have been focusing on youth development and currently top Group A after collecting points from forfeited matches, setting up a clash between Centurion’s experience and the youthful energy of the school side.
Another Bronze A fixture will see Tornado Cricket Club host Mukono Development at Florida Cricket Oval. Tornado will be making their first appearance of the season, while Mukono Development will be hoping to recover after losing their opening two matches.
In the Silver Category, Kutchi Tigers B take on St. John’s Mukono at the GM Sugar Oval. Both sides were established only last year, with Kutchi Tigers B reaching the Division Two eliminator before losing to Mukono Warriors.
St. John’s Mukono will be looking to bounce back after falling to Nile Cricket Club on Matchday One, setting up an intriguing contest between an emerging club structure and a youthful school-based side.
