Kobs prop Collin Kimbowa was among the winners of the Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards for the month of March in an event held on Tuesday at Lazio Bar and Restaurant in Kololo, Kampala.
Kimbowa emerged winner in the rugby category beating competition from fellow Rugby Premier League players, that is; previous winner and also Kobs player Pius Ogena and Buffaloes’ Eric Tolit.
Kimbowa who picks the award for the first time ever says that he’s now motivated to work harder and to put in the work whenever he gets onto the pitch.
“It’s not an easy thing to be chosen as the best. There are many players in the league and me being chosen means that there are people out there who appreciate what I do and I promise to put in more effort for the remainder of the season,” Kimbowa said after picking the Fortebet sponsored award.
Kimbowa helped Kobs win all five league games played in March to finish the month top of the 10-team table before his side lost to Heathens the previous weekend, a result that saw them move to second on the table with the title holders taking charge of the radar.
Despite dropping crucial points last weekend, Kimbowa believes that Kobs will fight a way of bounciest back and possibly take the champions trophy at the end of the campaign.
“Our ambition is to be champions this season and we have to work more harder to achieve that,” Kimbowa noted adding that he anticipates good times in the remainder of the season.
In other categories, Parvin Nangonzi was named best table tennis player for the month of March. She beat Mauritius’ second seed to qualify for the Africa Senior championship; she further helped her women’s side to qualify for the team event in the same championship.
In the woodball category, Joyce Nalubega was named winner. She started the month of March by winning the first beach circuit with 39 strokes beating her closest challenger, Lillian Zawedde by 10 strokes. Nalubega, who joined the Ministry of Public Service team this season from Eminents, was also on form winning the stroke singles at the Kyambogo Open with 97 strokes, one better than former teammate Joan Mukoova.
Darts made a maiden appearance at the awards and Bank of Uganda’s Sarah Makanga took home the accolade. She registered a 4-0, 4-1 win against the Egyptians at the first African Darts Championship in Women Singles. She also won the Egypt Darts Open of the singles category.
KCCA FC star Roger Mato took home the football award. He is a national hero for his goal against Tanzania was a relief to every Ugandan in the AFCON qualifiers.
In the rally category, the winner is Yasin Nasser/Ali Katumba. The duo finished second at the Kenya Equator Rally which doubled as the second round of the Africa Rally championship. Nasser and Katumba beat Jas Mangat and Kamya who finished third at the same event and Joshua Muwanguzi and Nakigozi who won the Jacob Oulanya Memorial Autocross in Omoro.
Latib Muwonge was named winner in the boxing category. The dancing Rasta took home the award for becoming the 11th Ugandan to win an ABU title. He reached this milestone after beating Tanzania’s Albano Clement in the Super Lightweight category by unanimous decision in the 12 round at Club Obligato.
The awards ceremony was graced by its CEO Isaac Mukasa, Fortebet ambassador Alex Muhangi and Henry Zzimbe, a representative from Jude Color Solutions.
