The Uganda U-17 Men’s National Team has begun preparations for the 2026 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, with head coach Laryea Kingston expressing satisfaction following the squad’s first training session.
The session, held at the FUFA Technical Centre Njeru, marked the start of camp for the provisional squad as the team begins its build-up to the continental tournament.
Kingston explained that the opening training focused on light exercises aimed at gradually introducing the players to the training programme and activating their muscles after reporting to camp.
“This is the first training and the impressions have been very good. We started on a very low note because we need to get the muscles going. I think the boys are looking a bit sharp,” Kingston said.
He acknowledged that the first session can sometimes be difficult for players as they adapt to the demands of camp but noted that the intensity will increase gradually.
“Of course, the first training is sometimes a bit difficult for them. We started the training very slow but with time it picked up a little bit. It’s the first training so we will build up from it,” he added.
The coach also revealed that the squad is yet to reach full attendance, with more players expected to report to camp in the coming days.
“We are still expecting some players to join so that we have a full house and then the education will start,” Kingston said.
He added that the current week will largely focus on physical activation before the team moves into more detailed tactical and technical sessions.
“This week will be more about activating the muscles so that the boys get going. Proper education will start next week,” he explained.
Despite the early stage of preparations, Kingston remains optimistic about the team’s progress and the attitude shown by the players in the opening session.
“It looks good so far and we are looking forward to having good days ahead,” he concluded.
The Uganda Cubs will continue their training camp in Njeru as preparations for the 2026 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations gather momentum.
