The third edition of the Ghetto Mini Junior Tennis Tournament was held this weekend at East Kololo Primary School Tennis Courts in Kampala.
The mini junior showpiece that was organized by Let’s Play Tennis Uganda was played on a tiebreak format.
22 players (15 boys and 7 girls) took part in the tournament that was played in three categories, that is; 5-7 years played with red balls, 8-10 years played with orange balls and 12-14 years played with green balls.
In the red ball court, Kato Byaruhanga emerged triumphant after edging Marvin Madoi 10 6 in the final.
Ambrose Byaruhanga emerged champion in the green ball court after a 1 7 win against Ricky Ogen in the final.
In the orange court, Steacy Namirembe who was the only girl to make it to the final lost 4 8 to Nicolas Malwaya. Namirembe had beaten Peter Omondi 8 6 in the semi final while Malwaya beat Jonathan Senyomo 8 6 in the other semi final.
Event organizer, Edward Odocken also a national coach and co-founder Let’s Play Tennis Uganda says that the tournament will help in budding of athletes even from the underprivileged communities.
“It was a successful tournament. It will help in the development and expansion of tennis even in the ghetto/slum areas. We are hoping for a much bigger event next time round and continue to follow up on junior athletes,” Odocken said.
Let’s Play Tennis Uganda is an academy that nurtures tennis youngsters, some of which have represented the country especially at a junior stage.
