Usually when journalists, fans and the entire football fraternity go to stadiums to watch games, they are looking for fan –which generally comes from a superb goal, remarkable move, unforgettable dribble, new talent or the exciting atmosphere around.

The 2019 Airtel Rising Stars (ARS) U17 tournament was concluded early this month with Eastern and Kitara region lifting the national Boys and Girls titles respectively.

The eighth (8th) edition of the Airtel-Uganda sponsored annual tournament did not only come with thrilling action, but also new football talents were exposed to the football world.

Lupai

In the line, the tournament came with more than on-the-pitch talent with Lupai Godfrey taking the Lira audience by storm through his stunning football commentary. The 13-year old approached the organizers and asked for a chance to commentate the West Nile and Northern region finals.

With his size, height and looks, one would be right to expect the usual noise at the microphone. Not Lupai! He did show signs of a prospective live TV football commentator as he did boast of the commentary basics along with fluent English.

Lupai does commentary in Lira

“I want to express my football passion to people and I also want to be a popular commentator in the future. I listen to match commentary on DStv and pick the basics. I really love football commentary and I want to practice and perfect it whenever I get a chance. I believe I will achieve my dream,” noted the Lira Town College Senior one student, who started imitating football commentators at 11 years of age while still in Primary school at Fountain Nursery and primary boarding school.

A footballer himself, who plays as a forward at Naiga sports academy in Lira, Lupai is born to Bashir Opio and Joyce Poni from South Sudan and is the last born of three siblings.
