East Africa’s most storied cricket rivalry is set to reignite as Uganda’s Cricket Cranes face off with arch-rivals Kenya in Game 3 of the Pearl of Africa T20I Series at Entebbe Oval today, July 21. Known as the Migingo Derby, the high-stakes clash promises fireworks as both teams chase regional bragging rights and crucial series points.
Uganda, led by newly-appointed captain Juma Miyaji, head into the match with confidence sky-high after securing two convincing wins in their opening games. Miyaji has had a dream start to his captaincy, and his side is riding a five-match T20I win streak over Kenya — a dominant run that includes wins by 106, 72, and 91 runs in their last three encounters.
“The derby is going to be a big fight,” said Miyaji. “We call on fans to come support us. It’s going to be exciting, and we want to give our best.”
Kenya, however, is determined to halt Uganda’s momentum. After splitting their first two matches in the tournament, the visitors know a win is crucial to keep their title hopes alive. Vice-captain Lucas Oluoch Ndandason emphasized Kenya’s readiness to fight.
“Our ambition as Kenya is always to win the title, especially the derby,” he noted. “Entebbe is a slow pitch; 140 is the par score. We’re here to challenge Uganda.”
Kenya will look to experienced heads such as Rakep Patel, Shem Ngoche, and returning skipper Dhiren Gondaria, who makes a comeback from sabbatical. Uganda, meanwhile, counts on match-winners like Robinson Obuya, Cosmas Kyewuta, Dinesh Nakrani, and Alpesh Ramjani—all known for stepping up in big games.
Assistant coach Jackson Ogwang emphasized Uganda’s focus on execution and maintaining momentum.
“T20s can change quickly. Today’s session was about getting our batters going again. We’ll see how we shuffle the squad. The team is in good shape.”
With Uganda currently top of the table with 4 points and Kenya trailing with a win and a loss, the outcome of Monday’s Migingo Derby will significantly shape the title race.
The match will follow the earlier fixture between UAE and Nigeria at 9:30 am, with Uganda vs. Kenya slated for 1:30 pm.
