An increase in participation of the 2019 NSSF-Kampala Hills Run has seen excess of Shs50m from the set target. Initially, the organisers had set Shs600m as the 2019 target, but Shs650m was instead collected, according to the National social security fund (NSSF) Managing Director (MD) Richard Byarugaba.

Thousands of runners graced the early morning energy-sapping run to conquer the seven hills of Kampala as they ran for charity and fitness. “There is an increase in participation and thus the increase in money raised,” noted Byarugaba, who also saw improvement in his previous finishing time.

Moses Muchana was the overall winner with 1:17 timing. It was his 7th time participating, having finished 6th last year as Martin Ssenabulya came on top with 1:18 timing. There were also rewards for the best female and corporate company.

Apart from NSSF, the run was also co-sponsored by UMEME, Orient bank, Standard Chartered bank, DFCU, Red Pepper publication among others. Winnie Nwagi was the artiste to see off the runners.

With the run opening up from corporate companies to individual participation for the first time, this year’s run has also expanded to benefit four upcountry schools on top of the KCCA public schools in Kampala.

NSSF recently handed over Shs93m to KCCA and this went towards refurbishing classroom blocks at Mbuya and St. Paul Nsambya primary schools, a process that has already started. KCCA has received more than Shs300m over the last three years.

NSSF also engaged in Blood Donation Drive recently –an annual activity that helps in restocking the National Blood Bank Reserves during school holidays and support to maternal and child health through donations to hospitals like Kiruddu among others
