NCS directs FUBA to suspend National Basketball League

National Council of Sports (NCS) has directed local basketball governing body, Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) to suspend the top tier league, the National Basketball League.

In its letter to the federation (FUBA) dated 3rd June, NCS says that the decision is based on the sharp rise in Covid-19 positive cases in the country, a situation that has caused worries in various sectors especially those that pull crowds like sports activities.

The twofold letter highlighted two key issues, that is;

“1) To inform you of this unfortunate development of the high rates of infection of the Covid19 pandemic, and the need for safety for all Ugandans.”

“2) To direct you to suspend with immediate effect, all planned fixtures/games for the 2021 Basketball League currently on-going in the country, until further notice.”

The 2021 national basketball league, sponsored by Tusker Lite has  been the only domestic competition going on after FUBA halted the lower leagues a fewer days ago due to financial constraints.

Matches have been played at KIU and UCU basketball courts as a Covid-19 preventive for outdoor activity was encouraged that’s why MTN Arena, Lugogo was avoided.

However, at the moment most sports federations are embracing the vaccination drive to ensure the safety of all those involved and possibly have play uninterrupted.
