The Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, has announced Nicholas Natuhereza as their new head coach ahead of the FIBA Africa Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt. The tournament offers a coveted spot at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket.
Natuhereza, who previously served as the Gazelles’ assistant coach, succeeds Goran Lojo, who has taken a role with Great Britain.
FUBA President, Nasser Sserunjogi, expressed confidence in Natuhereza’s leadership, stating, “Nick Natuhereza will be the head coach for the Gazelles at the upcoming FIBA Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt. While Goran Lojo was initially set to lead the team, he opted for another opportunity, and we wish him all the best. However, we trust Nick’s experience and knowledge will guide the team to success.”
Joining Natuhereza on the technical team are Julius Lutwama as assistant coach and Ugandan basketball legend Ben Komakech as the team’s video analyst.
Speaking about his new role, Natuhereza shared his enthusiasm: “I accept the challenge. It’s always an honor to be in this position as the head coach. Hopefully, we can do some good things and qualify for the AfroBasket.”
The Gazelles are set to begin their preparations on Tuesday, January 21, as they aim to secure qualification at the qualifiers.
