Ugandan boxer David Ssemujju Kavuma is out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after losing to Algeria’s Younes Nemouchi in the Middleweight round of 32 bout at Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

Algeria’s Nemouchi won the battle on unanimous points decision (5-0) to book a place in the last 16 where he will face Philippines’ Marcial Eumir.

Nemouchi won with all the judges’ score-cards reading 30-27, 30-27, 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27.

Ssemujju and Nemouchi were meeting for a third time with the former having won in the first meeting at the 2019 All Africa games in Morocco. Nemouchi has now won the previous two fights.

Ssemujju’s exit means that Uganda’s only hope for a medal in the boxing category lies upon Bombers (national boxing team) Captain Shadir Musa Bwogi who will come up against Georgia’s Eskekhan Madiev in the Welterweight Round of 16 category on Tuesday.

The other Bomber at the Olympics, Catherine Nanziri was beaten on Sunday by Japanese female boxer Namiki Tsukumi. Nanziri was making her debut at the games and is the first ever Ugandan female boxer to appear at the Olympics.

The Olympics will run from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan with 25 Ugandan athletes (13 females and 12 males) set to be in the mix.
