Uganda Cranes legend Denis Onyango officially joined the national team’s CHAN 2024 training camp this morning at the Prisons Ground in Luzira, where he led a special session with the team’s goalkeepers.
Onyango, who is currently on holiday in the country, responded positively to a request from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) to support the goalkeeping department during his stay. His arrival at the 10:00 AM session added a touch of class and inspiration to the ongoing preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Uganda is co-hosting with Kenya and Tanzania.
“It’s always a pleasure to give back to the national team,” Onyango said after the session. “I may be retired from international football, but Uganda Cranes will always be part of me. I’m here to help where I can and share my experience with these young, talented keepers.”
The former Mamelodi Sundowns star and long-serving Cranes captain worked closely with goalkeepers Joel Mutakubwa (BUL FC), Hannington Ssebwalunyo (NEC FC), Crispas Kusiima (Kitara FC), Mutwalibu Mugolofa (KCCA FC), and Denis Kiggundu (Vipers SC), offering guidance on positioning, shot-stopping, and game-reading.
FUFA welcomed Onyango’s presence in camp, calling it a timely morale boost for the squad as the countdown to CHAN 2024 continues.
“Denis is not just a legend, he’s a mentor. His willingness to step in, even while on holiday, speaks volumes about his commitment to Ugandan football,” FUFA said in a brief statement.
