Uganda 1-1 Zimbabwe

Egypt 2-0 DRC

Uganda and Zimbawe played to a 1-1 draw in a thrilling Group A clash on Wednesday at the Cairo international stadium, Egypt.

Uganda took the lead through Emma Okwi’ close-range tap-in after Zimbabwe goal keeper George Chigova parried Abdu Lumala’s shot from the right.

Zimbabwe equalized through impressive Khama Billiat after fanstastic work down by Ovidy Karuru on the left. Zimbabwe’s Knowledge Musona missed glorious chances hitting the cross bar when he faced an open goal from four yards after Evans Rusike had also had a shot saved on goal line by goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Patrick Kaddu would have netted his second of the tournament for the Cranes butvolleyed over from six yards with the goal empty.

Zimbawe, who sought a third win at the continental showpiece now have to beat DRC in last group game on Sunday to have a chance of making it to the knockout stage for the first time in history while Uganda, who slipped to second of the group after the stalemate with four points from two games, will face Egypt in last game.

The hosts and record seven-time champions beat Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 2-0 later in the day to move top with six points in two matches to confirm knockout progress.

Elmohamady and Muhammed Salah scored the goals. Uganda started the far better team before Zimbabwe took control of the game as play maker Billiat got playing up front and down the flanks.

It was a tough encounter

The man who kept Uganda in it was Denis Onyango, making an outstanding save late on from goal line. Uganda made one change from the starting XI that played against DRC in the 2-0 win with Ronald Mukiibi replacing Murushid Jjuuko in center back. In Group B, Nigeria became the first team to qualify for the last 16 as they beat Guinea 1-0 courtesy of Kenneth Omeruo.
